SAILING INTO PORT

Dawn breaks as we approach the port of Havana and the oceanfront district

A daylight view of the oceanfront district

High atop a hill sits Fort Jesus, where this enormous statue of Jesus (note the person standing at its base) greets visitors to Havana

Another view of Havana pier

A tugboat meets our ship and directs it into the terminal

The international terminal,Terminal Sierra Maestra San Francisco

UNIVERSIDAD LA HABANA

SASers descend on the university en masse

Looking back from the main entrance

The inside of the university's chapel; Cuba, and most of Latin America,is by and large Catholic

We were guests at a welcome ceremony held by the university; there was a sense of cooperation and friendship rarely shared between Americans and Cubans

Visit Universidad la Habana at http://www.uh.cu (Spanish)

THE CHERNOBYL CAMP FOR CHILDREN

The main facilities, run-down after years of post-USSR financial hardship

The child patients with SASers; the hospital treats young cancer victims of the Chernobyl fallout

THE CUBAN COUNTRYSIDE

And you thought rest-stops were uniquely American?

On the opposite side of Cuba near the Bay of Pigs, a motorboat speeds us toward an island in the middle of a thriving wetland

A re-creation of a native Cuban dwelling, complete with figurines

EXPLORING OLD HAVANA

An old stone cathedral near the pier

One of the many narrow alleys that weave through Old Havana

I attended a Santeria performance one evening

The infamous Camel bus, a giant people-trailer pulled by a semi-tractor

Old Havana was filled with beautiful, lavish architecture from the early 1900's

Classic American cars are a Cuban passion
