Salvador de Bahia, Brazil
EXPLORING SALVADOR
Perched on the side of the hill that divides the lower and upper city, these favelas (the Brazilian term for slums) demonstrate vast class differences and the desolute conditions in which many Brazilians must live
This elevator was one of two ways to travel on foot between the lower and upper cities; The other way was a cable-car
In the Pelligreno, the historic and cultural center of the upper city, reside several extravagent cathedrals built by slaves during Portuguese colonial rule; a giant cross marks the entrance into the cathedral section
A square with a beautiful fountain and one of the Salvador cathedrals
PRAIA DO FORTE: PROJETO TAMAR (THE MARINE TURTLE PROJECT)
Projeto Tamar is a breeding, rescue, research, and habitat-preservation organization dedicated to the preservation of endangered marine turtles.
For more information, visit the Projeto Tamar homepage
PRAIA DO FORTE: VILLAGE
This beautiful poisada (similar to a Guest House in Europe or a bed-and-breakfast in the states) was our home during our stay here
The main road that ran through the quaint resort village of Praia do Forte
PRAIA DO FORTE: RAINFOREST
A scenic view of the Atlantic ocean
This fortress was one of the original settlements in Brazil; settled by a Portuguese explorer, this structure protected his farm and lands
Carlos was the man; he was our tour guide for two trips while in Brazil, and he had a wealth of information to share with us
We travelled into this remnant of Atlantic rainforest for a morning hike
A group of Brazilians lives in the rainforest, practicing subsistance farming and maniac production (the South American equivalent of flour and their main staple)
This is a manioc mill; manioc is made in a process similar to that for flour
The children of rainforest villagers either followed us on our hike or cautiously watched from afar
BACK IN SALVADOR: THE AX`E CIRCUS
The Ax'e Circus (pronounced 'Ashay') is a wonderful organization that takes in street children, teaches them both practical and performing skills, and gives them both a way out and a sense of empowerment for escaping the viscous cycle of poverty
Click here for a detailed description of the Ax'e Circus program
At this performance, cast members from MTV(c)'s Road Rules(TM) who were on our SAS voyage participated; Ayana is shown in the third picture (left)
VISITING THE ISLANDS OFF SALVADOR'S COAST
An old fort, perched precariously in the middle of the bay
A breathtaking view of a small, secluded island off the coast of Salvador
A view of the ship as we return from visiting the islands
