Cape Town, South Africa
SAILING INTO CAPE TOWN
A breathtaking sunrise view of Cape Town's Table Mountain
Cape Town pier
A South African band playing an eclectic part-Western, part-African tune greeted us
Downtown Cape Town; we were in South Africa during National Peace Day
THE TOWNSHIPS OF CAPE TOWN
The small shacks that serve as homes for a large percentage of black South Africans
The Township children; not only their plight but their hope and courage spoke to us of the human spirit
A child looks off past the squalor of Township life to the mountains beyond
KHAYELITSHA: HOPOLANG PRIMARY SCHOOL
The spirited, hopeful children of K-Litsha's Hopolang school
The children sang a touching song about South African youth putting their weapons down and coming home
KHAYELITSHA: A VISIT THROUGH THE TOWNSHIP
These children performed a native South African dance for us
This young girl tried so hard to dance as well as the older children; the result was that she was simply adorable
K-litsha from afar - this giant lightpost that looms over the Township is a stark reminder of South Africa's dark Apartheid past; lightposts like these lit the Townships with a permanent dusk that allowed police to conduct their nighttime raids and numerous atrocities

A HIKE UP TABLE MOUNTAIN
A mountain view of the mist-covered Cape Town
Views up (left) and down (right) the mountain pass we were hiking through
A gorgeous view of the upper plateau that gives the mountain its name
A giant natural reservoir on the top of Table Mountain; this reservoir provides Cape Town with much of its water
A view on the hike back down; the King Perota flower, with a bloom the size of a large fist, grows in the bottom-right corner, and Cape Town's enormous botanical gardens can be seen in the distance
BREEDE RIVER
A view of the Breede River, which we both canoed on and camped near
I have a soft-spot for animals, and I was especially endeared to this one; this is the camp 'guard-dog' Half-Jack, so named because he is part Jack Russell terrier
The Breede River camp; I stayed in one of these covered wagons, which did little to keep out the rain and cold
